Lobbyist first impression

Been waiting for this to show two weeks ago until it was postponed due to some political matters. It then showed last week, showing two episodes in a day which made it four episodes by the end of last week. And as I write now, I have finished six episodes of it and up to pace with it.

In a nutshell, Lobbyist is a drama that draws the violent fights among each country’s lobbyists who say that they will gain hegemony/supremacy in the munitions industry of the world and in the drama, an American immigrant, who is a South Korean woman acts as an international arms lobbyist to the hero.

About how the drama is doing, I have to say I am kind of disappointed. I have to admit that after watching Time of Dog and Wolf, it has set a high bar for me when it comes to such shows in future. The first two episodes started with a shooting in the middle of a desert with Harry, Maria and Tae Hyuk involved.

It then shifted to the past telling how Maria and Harry met when they were kids in the midst of a North Korean spy submarine mission gone awry. It bought them together and also led to their eventual parting. But quite how two kids could get into the area near the submarine, this I can’t fathom even though this is a drama. The editing was quite frentic but also hard to get into with all the shaking. I couldn’t feel the intensity at all.

Episode 2 was primarily on their childhood in America and how much they suffered. It was pretty sorrowful for Maria to experience the loss of her father who had been shot. On another hand, Harry would rely on guns to get away from his abusive father. Telling us essentially on how guns changed their present life in different ways and likely future.

When they start speaking English, it was pretty hard to comprehend. The acting of the American actors was downright bad. They deliver their lines so blandly and lifeless that it was simply ridiculous. If not for the subs, I don’t think I can survive watching it.

And when the Koreans start speaking English save for a few, they lose the soul of what they are suppose to say. You lose interest in what they are saying because you are busy trying to make out what exactly are they saying.

Plus, why does it feel like I am watching a tourist video as they keep showing attraction after attraction while playing the touristy music in the background. And it keeps on showing and showing different attractions, it just felt like filler.

The little kids are SUCH GOOD actors, especially young Maria. Kind of neat to see young and adult Maria looking so alike. It’s always sad to see them go after a while. There are lots of Jumong alumni in Song Il Gook, Hur Joon Ho (Hae Mo Su), Lee Jae Yong (Boo Deuk Bool ) who are in the same show playing important figures again. Jang Jin Young and Song Il Gook speaks well in english but it’s hard to make out what the others are saying besides them.

Loved the scene at Montauk Beach at New York Long Island City where Tae Hyuk and Eva got “married” and finally kissed.

Jang Jin Young is doing well in her spunk role as Maria but I really can’t emote with her when she starts crying in some scenes, it just isn’t convincing. Nice to see her character change from a goofy one to a now more serious one. She has to do better in her crying though.

Song Il Gook role is pretty much a vase at the moment, not much happening for him and he looks like a rookie besides Hur Joon Ho. The way that his character is progressing, I have pretty much no interest nor liking for it.

Pretty impressed and more interested in Han Jae Suk role as Tae Hyuk. Having found love in Eva and then indirectly causing her death. Am really into his storyline of finding the culprits behind Eva’s death. Plus he has some sort of authority as the son of a prominent person in Korea.

The saddest scene for me was when Maria was reading Eva’s letter while she was back to Korea. Telling her sister that she didn’t regret any of her actions that led to her eventual death. She trusted Tae Hyuk and what she did was out of duty to her nation. Pity that her nation betrayed her and her love with Tae Hyuk ended that abruptly.

It probably won’t do well in the ratings seeing that it is up against Tae Wang Sa Shin Gi on the Wed/Thus timeslot. But it is holding steady at around 15% ratings and the story is likely to pick up soon just like what happened in Time of Dog and Wolf. Maria is likely to morph into a lobbyist in her attempt to find Eva’s killer and James would be her mentor seeing that he feels guilty somewhat. Tae Hyuk likewise in order to gain power to find out Eva’s killer. That’s my guess.

I am just SUPER glad that they are back in Korea. With this being a 24 episodes drama, there’s still time for them to do better in terms of the editing. Time for serious and better drama. The lobbyist theme has so much for them to explore.
