Gospel Reflections[feb8]

February 8, Fifth Sunday in
Ordinary Time, Mark 1:29-39

In the first reading Job was lamenting to God the misfortunes that hit him he lost almost everything: his family, his friends, his possessions not only that he was also afflicted with a terrible sickness. He was full of desperation. He was already complaining to God: “why me? I have not done anything wrong?” Not knowing that at the end God will restore everything for him and more blessings will be given him.

If we are going through hardship right now let us learn from Job, let us not lose faith in God. In time everything will be back to normal we’ll be able to pass thru this economic turbulence that we are in right now. We just need to keep the faith that things will be alright for us soon.

In the gospel we see Jesus went to the house Simon and Andrew to heal Simon’s mother in-law who is sick with fever. Brothers and Sisters there will come a time that we too will get sick. Thus, it is important for us that we know that there is a Healing Sacrament called Anointing of the Sick. This is one of the seven Sacraments of our Catholic church. Like death; sickness is an integral part of our lives it will visit us someday and there will come a time that when sickness visits us it may lead us to death so it is very very important that we ask a Priest to anoint our sick with this healing sacrament. For it will heal us maybe not always physically but for certain it will help us spiritually for so long as believe and have faith.

I’ve been a Lay Minister for almost ten years now, for countless times I’ve accompanied Priests visit the sick to administer this healing sacrament. I’ve witnessed a relative sick with cancer of the liver who was given only a few months to live but she stayed on for almost three years. However, there was one visit to the sick that will forever be etched on my mind. This was when a bone thin sick Lay Minister was administered this healing sacrament after a few days he was able to walk again and resume his normal way of life.

It is also mentioned in the gospel that Jesus rose very early in the morning He went to deserted place and prayed. We see that in His humanity Jesus always goes to a quite place to pray to the father, to commune with the one who sent Him and that is God.

Sometimes in the drudgery of life there will be times that we might forget to pray—we must never allow that to happen for we always need to get connected with God through prayers. Let us notice that after we’ve prayed with our all being we feel refreshed and ready to do battle with life’s challenges again. It’s because we’ve been strengthened by God thru our prayers.

There are others who multi task; these are usually the busy ones. They say that while doing their morning exercise they also pray. Is this right? I don’t think so, how can they concentrate with their communion with God if their attention is divided?

Let us forever learn from Jesus when He prays. He always goes to a quite deserted place—there He prays with all of His being...

Gospel Reflections[feb5-7]

February 5, Thursday Mark 6:7-13

According to a written commentary in Judaism there is a need for two witnesses to attest to the reality of a completed accomplishment. That’s why Jesus sent the apostles two by two to serve as witness to each others good deeds. But more than that I think the twelve were sent two by two to be of help to each other, to strengthen each other whenever they feel like giving up in making a positive impact in the lives of their fellowmen.

Jesus emphasized to the apostles their complete trust and confidence on Him because He will provide for them. That’s why He said: “Take nothing with you except for your walking stick: “No food, no sack, no money in your belts.”

By our Baptism we also share in the mission of the twelve, we are also being commissioned by Jesus to heal those who are emotionally and spiritually wounded because of poverty largely created by the harsh economic environment that we are in right now.

There’s a lot of them nowadays maybe they’re your poor siblings, parents, neighbor or even a complete stranger just passing by you. Let’s not worry about ourselves Jesus will take care of us in return as what He did with the apostles.

February 6, Friday Mark 6:14-29

John the Baptist denounced the immorality of Herodias and King Herod and he paid dearly for it. He was beheaded at the behest of his daughter who danced for them in his banquet. It was an elaborate plan by Herodias who harbored anger against John.

The price of exposing the truth is very heavy indeed. Take for example Mr. Jun Lozada the whistleblower in the ZTE broadband corruption scandal. The hero is now in hiding and fearful of his life. This is the price that he has to pay for having the courage to tell the truth on how deeply rooted corruption in Philippine government is. He is not alone in this lonely Don Quixotic crusade.

Sometimes we too are afraid to denounce/expose immorality in our own sphere of environment because it may cost us dearly but how can we correct a wrong if we will just keep quite?

Political Philosopher Edmund Burke said: “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.”

February 7, Saturday Mark 6:30-34

After working so hard in spreading the good news of Jesus the apostles went back to Jesus and reported what they have done and taught. Contented and pleased with what they have done He said: “Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while.”

Unknown to many Priests and us also have our regular retreat/recollection schedules at least once a year. Us for example we had our one day Advent recollection in the Saint Gaspar Bertoni Seminary here in Carmona. It was beautifully facilitated by Fr. Romulo Bertoni CSS an Italian Stigmatine religious priest. Inside our recollection we had Confession and a Mass was celebrated for us. This coming February 28 we will have again our one day recollection to be facilitated by a Filipino Priest this will coincide with our renewal to our ministry.

Taking rest and contemplating about the goodness of God and the importance of what we do for the people of God is very important. Because it recharges and refreshes us to be more committed in our ministry where God has called us.

Others like you may not have been to a retreat/recollection but you can do it also in your own little way. Having a daily exclusive quite time for God will do wonders for us for the reason that it will make us aware that amidst the daily grind of our lives there’s a God who is in charge of it all. Who continually strengthens us....

Gospel Reflections [feb1-4]

Gospel Reflections for February 1:
Sunday Mark 1:21-28

What do we get if we are taught by someone without authority? We get nothing from it. Would we still go and listen to him? Of course not! We would prefer to go and listen to the person who teaches with authority and conviction.

Jesus teaches both with authority and conviction that’s why when He entered the synagogue and taught there. Everyone was captured in amazement and admiration. It was further reinforced when they saw Jesus rebuked and commanded the evil spirit to come out of the man whom it has possessed.

Now, relating this gospel reading to our lives. Jesus still talks to us with authority and conviction until this very moment through the Ordained Ministers of the church (the Pope, Bishops, Priest and Deacons) through the gospel and readings at Mass. We must intently listen to what is being proclaimed in the readings and gospels for it will guide us on how to live our lives pleasing in the eyes of God.

God also speaks to us in the homily/sermon of the priest; if only we will intently listen we will certainly get something out of it no matter how boring the homily is. But sometimes we don’t even care to listen when the priest is giving his homily because our ears, minds and attentions are wondering somewhere else.

When we read the bible specially His proclamations He also talks to us there with authority. If we will be serious in our bible readings/study we will be able to discern Jesus directly speaking to us. Just try reading with faith John 6 (the Eucharistic discourse of Jesus). But the big question mark again is: Do we read our bibles? Or it is just in the corner gathering dust.

The man possessed with an unclean spirit immediately sensed the presence of Jesus that’s why when Jesus said: “"Quiet! Come out of him!" It immediately convulsed; these words of Jesus are so powerful that the unclean spirit immediately came out of from the man. This is also what Jesus does in our lives once we religiously listen to Him. He will drive out all the demons of this material world that is slowly enslaving us. These demons/unclean spirit are the following: Our greed for material thing, our lust for the flesh our egoistic attitudes and many more ungodly things....

Gospel Reflections for February 2,
Monday Luke 2:22-40

I’d like to focus my reflection on Simeon, a righteous and devout man. He was given a revelation by the Holy Spirit that he should not see death before he had seen the Christ of the Lord. Then, finally the revelation came to pass. Jesus was brought into the temple by His parents upon seeing the Baby Jesus He took Him into his arms and blessed God by saying: “"Now, Master, you may let your servant go in peace, according to your word, for my eyes have seen your salvation.” Simeon further said: “Behold, this child is destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be contradicted and you yourself a sword will pierce so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed."

The grace of the Holy Spirit was with Simeon because he was a righteous and devout man of God. What if he was not righteous and devout would he still receive the revelation? I don’t think so.

What is very clear here is that righteousness and devoutness to God can do us a lot of good we may not be aware of it but we are actually inviting the grace of the Holy Spirit when we are inspired to follow Simeon’s righteousness and devoutness to God.

Let us all follow Simeon’s path, for we will surely gain favour from God....

Gospel Reflections for February 3,
Tuesday Mark 5:21-43

We see in the gospel two stories of faith with actions.

The first one is an official of the synagogue named Jairus who upon Seeing Him he fell at his feet and pleaded earnestly with him, saying, "My daughter is at the point of death. Please, come lay your hands on her that she may get well and live."

The second one is a woman who has been afflicted with hemorrhage for twelve years. She heard that Jesus will be passing thru her way. When He passed thru her she touched His cloak with the belief that her action will heal her.

Both Jairus and the woman got the healing that they wanted from Jesus because they both have faith and they supported their faith with actions. They did not just pray for healing—they went out of their way to meet Jesus and have that personal encounter with Him.

Brothers and sisters it is not enough that we pray for healing we must have that initiative to meet Jesus in the flesh and also have that personal encounter with Him. Our Roman Catholic faith has taught us that we have this personal encounter with Jesus by being present in the celebration of the Holy Mass. It is during Communion in the Mass the we become one with Him.

To me this is the most perfect opportunity to ask Jesus in faith whatever healings that we want from Him. But the big question is this: “Do we have that freewill to be with Jesus in the celebration of the Holy Mass?”

Gospel Reflections for February 4,
Wednesday Mark 6:1-6

What is the feeling of a person who will be going back to the place where he spent almost thirty years of his life? Of course it’s a mix feeling of excitement and anticipation. This must have been the feeling of Jesus while He was on His way to Nazareth—His native place.

Unfortunately He got a rude welcome from His town mates, He was mocked some even took offense at Him. For whatever reasons I don’t know. Perhaps they were envious of Jesus sudden fame with the Masses; perhaps they could not accept that Jesus has become an eloquent speaker and a healer. Perhaps they have that crab mentality mindset already.

As a consequence of their unbelieving attitude Jesus did not make any spectacular healings there for He was amazed at their lack of faith. His townsfolk lack of faith invites us also to examine our own faith in Jesus.

Maybe it’s lacking also...

Kim Bum met another car accident

Kim Bum met with a car accident during dawn on 9th February on his way back from filming drama ‘Boys Over Flowers’, and was sent to GangDongSeongShim hospital in GangDongGoo. He also underwent a surgery. Fortunately, Kim Bum did not sustain from any major injuries except for a small injury at his toes.

Already, on 1st February, after the car that Kim Bum was riding in when he was traveling to a filming set in GyeongGiDo bumped into another car, fans were all worried about Kim Bum after he had complained of backache.

One of the staff at GangDongSeongShim hospital said, “Kim Bum was sent in at around 12.20 am and he underwent a surgery for his torn toe. After the operation ended, there are plans for him to stay hospitalized for further treatment.”

Gospel Reflections [feb25-28]

╬February 25, Wednesday Matthew 6:1-6, 16-18

My Reflections:
Today is Ash Wednesday the start of the season of Lent this day also is a day of Fasting. All of us will be attending Mass and let ourselves be marked by a cross made of Ash and the Priest/Lay Minister will tell us: “Remember that you are dust and unto dust you shall return.” (Genesis 3:19).

In the gospel Jesus gives us valuable lessons on giving: “Take care not to perform righteous deeds in order that people may see them; When you give alms, do not blow a trumpet before you.”

Lessons on how to pray: “"When you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, who love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on street corners so that others may see them. But when you pray, go to your inner room, close the door, and pray to your Father in secret.”

Lesson on proper fasting: “do not look gloomy like the hypocrites. They neglect their appearance, so that they may appear to others to be fasting.”

Sometimes we are swayed by the trappings of the secular world we are prone to temptations. like for example in giving, we want others to see that we give or donate. The worst part of it is we give because we don't need it or it is our spare so we give. Is this the true essence of giving?

On the aspect of prayer and fasting we want others to see us praying/fasting to give that impression that we are pius and prayerful but our real intent is for others to see it so that they'll have a good impression of us. If only they knew our true motives.

The Lenten season reminds us not to subscribe to the temporary values of this world let us rather walk the path of Jesus. ...

╬February 26, Thursday Luke 9:22-25

My Reflections:
Jesus gives us a paradoxical statement: "If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. What profit is there for one to gain the whole world yet lose or forfeit himself?"

On the surface this may seem to be an odd statement but if we are faithful followers of Christ this is a priceless and wisdom filled words of Jesus. Once we decide to follow the path of Jesus we will deny ourselves with the inducement of this world and we will courageously carry our cross and follow Him. Amidst the carrying of our daily cross we will notice that it is not that heavy simply because Jesus is with us. Helping us carry whatever cross that we have.

When Jesus was carrying the cross towards Golgotha/Calvary His cross became a sign of suffering and intense pain. However the same cross became the sign of Triumph and Salvation.

What is the Cross that you are carrying right now? Humbly ask Jesus to help you carry your Cross. ...

╬February 27, Friday Matthew 9:14-15

My Reflections:
Obviously the Pharisees and the disciples of John didn’t know that Jesus is the Messiah that’s why they’ve asked Jesus: "Why do we and the Pharisees fast much, but your disciples do not fast?" if only they knew who was before them. They could have ignored to fast also.

The church teaches us that we have to observe fasting during Ash Wednesday and Good Friday only. Does it have any basis in the Bible? Yes, “He had this proclaimed throughout Nineveh, by decree of the king and his nobles: "Neither man nor beast, neither cattle nor sheep, shall taste anything; they shall not eat, nor shall they drink water. Man and beast shall be covered with sackcloth and call loudly to God; every man shall turn from his evil way and from the violence he has in hand. Who knows, God may relent and forgive, and withhold his blazing wrath, so that we shall not perish."(Jonah 3:7-9). “He fasted for forty days and forty nights, and afterwards he was hungry.”(Matthew 4:2).

Yesterday being Ash Wednesday I fasted for more than 24 hrs. And it was a very edifying experience somehow I felt the feeling of Jesus during the first day of His forty days fast. I’ve also discovered that I can still be productive even without food for as long as I focus my attention to the real intent of my fasting which is to walk in the path of Jesus when He fasted. ...

╬February 28, Saturday Luke 5:27-32

My Reflections:
The insight that we can get from this gospel is the steadfast desire of Jesus to call us all to conversion. He called Levi the corrupt tax collector to conversion and Levi followed without question. Perhaps Levi was already tired of his sinful life. And prior to the call of Jesus he may have heard about the life changing words and miracles of Jesus.

Levi abandoned his sinful past and lived his future life with Jesus and his life was never the same again.

Jesus’ call for Levi to conversion is His call for us too. For a long time we may have been living in sin, for a long time we may have been hearing marvellous words about Jesus. Why not try to respond and follow Jesus.

Jesus said: "I have not come to call the righteous to repentance but sinners."

Try Jesus, Just try following Him and I assure you that it will be the best decision that you will ever make in you life. ...

Lee Min Ho Explains and Predicts His Love Scandals

Lee Min Ho who became wildly popular as Goo Joon Pyo in Boys Before Flowers revealed that he will have more love scandals in the near future.

Kang Min Kyung and Lee Min Ho in high-school days

Lee Min Ho plays the leader of the legendary F4 in the drama. Shortly after the broadcast of episode 1 on 5th January, rumours regarding him and Davichi member, Kang Min Kyung being in a relationship were circulated on the internet. He was thus a little embarrassed recently because of the rumour.

Lee Min Ho expressed, “Even before the broadcast, I have already predicted that there will be such rumours regarding Kang Min Kyung and me. Photos and KTV videos taken with her were widely discussed and spread around online. But before this drama ends, 3 others might also be involved in a scandal with me. They are Park Bo Young, Choi Eun Seo and Moon Chae Won.”

Lee Min Ho, Park Bo Young, Choi Eun Seo, Moon Chae Won

Coincidentally, all 4 are rising stars in the current Korean entertainment circle. Kang Min Kyung has maintained a very close relationship with Lee Min Ho since debuting with Davichi. Park Bo Young (Overspeed Scandal) and Moon Chae Won (Painter of the Wind) have collaborated with him in Our School E.T.

Lee Min Ho explained, “They are like ‘brothers‘ to me and I much prefer a close relationship with my good friends. I have two ex-girlfriends after 19, but none since then. I am definitely not the one who cheats (two-timer) and will not enter into a relationship very easily either. I like pure and demure girls.”

Gook Ji Yun Gaining Attention From Boys Before Flowers

It’s highly likely that we are going to get more breakout stars once Boys Before Flowers is done. Lee Min Ho (Goo Jun Pyo) and Kim So Eun (Ga Eul) have been in the headlines recently, now it’s the turn of Gook Ji Yun, leader of the JinSunMi gang (the trio who heaps misery on Goo Hye Sun’s character, Jandi).

Future is Bright for Gook Ji Yun

Gook Ji Yun graduated from Dongduk Woman’s University with a Broadcasting & Entertainment Major and has been a CF model for KT1541 calling card service, Toshiba, Koreana, Starbucks, etc. Boys Before Flowers is the 24-year old first drama under Olive9 and marks her entry in the entertainment world.

Before the drama, she had taken extensive acting classes to prepare herself for the role. Her good looks and figure have won her many fans since her drama appearance, with many visiting her Cyworld to leave her messages.

snapshot20090115115112200901141006179f339200901141006596e552

In summary, the JinSunMi gang led by Gook Ji Yun (Choi Jin Hee/Ginger), Jang Ja Yun (Park Sun Ja/Sunny) and Min Young Won (Lee Mi Sook/Miranda) are probably the prettiest trio compared to the Japan and Taiwan versions.

Kim Bum and Kim So Eun First Meeting Excites Viewers

The first meeting between So Yi Jung (Kim Bum) and Chu Ga Eul (Kim So Eun) in KBS Boys Before Flowers has become an attraction for many viewers.

200901140817391001_10

In Episode 4 of Boys Before Flowers, the relationship between So Yi Jung and Chu Ga Eul finally got started although it was a rather fiesty beginning for them. But for viewers, their first meeting left a deep impression on them.

Yi Jung comes to look for Jandi at her workplace but meets her best friend, Ga Eul instead. Although Ga Eul is initially bowled over by Yi Jung suave appearance, she starts ranting angrily at him instead, after all the suffering that Jandi had suffered under F4. But Yi Jung just laughs it off and ponders.

200901140817391001_12

The birth of a new couple in Kim Bum and Kim So Eun has gotten a lot of good reaction from viewers after the broadcast. Viewers left comments expressing, “Kim Bum and Kim So Eun looks really cute as a couple, can’t wait to see what will happen”, “It’s somehow very captivating despite the fact that they were arguing when you look at them? They are simply too compatible.”

Viewers can expect to see more of the couple as it was said beforehand that the production team would be giving them more time to grow as a couple.

Kim So Eun as young Chun Chu

Kim So Eun is also currently involved with KBS Empress Chun Chu where she plays the younger version of Chun Chu. She is now enjoying a nice popularity boost thanks to her different charismatic displays for both dramas.

For those who have access to KBS World, Boys Before Flowers (with english subtitles) will air from 16th February. Check your local listings.

Boys Before Flowers Slammed For Absurd CG

Even as Boys Before Flowers obtained its highest rating last night, the amount of absurd looking CG (computer graphics) used were slammed by viewers.

Bad CG seen in Boys Before Flowers

In Episode 3 shown last night, the amount of absurd CG used were at its highest level. The fake ducks swimming in the pool, the fake snowflakes falling while Ji Ho (Kim Hyun Joong) was playing the violin, etc, it could be seen easily at first glance that it was created using CG of the lowest quality.

Viewers flooded the message board of the official website, slamming the use of the absurd looking CG effects. Some expressed, “I thought I was watching a drama in the 90s. If the use of a model helicopter instead of a real helicopter in the opening episode was to save on budget, I understand. But there was actually no real purpose in applying CG effects to the scenes for yesterday’s episode. It really spoiled the overall scene. I really can’t understand what the director is thinking of doing by applying CG effects to those scenes.”

Some also said, “Can’t believe that those CG effects were actually created using video techniques in this HD (high definition) era. Although the storyline and acting were excellent, but the crude CG effects really spoiled the overall viewing experience. It will really be a joke when this is viewed in other countries.”

On the ratings front though, KBS must be really pleased that Boys Before Flowers has already cleared the 20% mark in Episode 3, achieving 20.8% according to TNS Media. Most pointed out that because it’s vacation time for students in Korea, so more student fans are turning in to Boys Before Flowers on tv. Although MBC East of Eden still leads with 25.7%, the gap between them is gradually narrowing which was quite unthinkable from the start.

KBS Boys Before Flowers Makes Desired Impact on Opening

Boys Before Flowers certainly did not disappoint as it delighted KBS authorities with a strong showing of 14.3% for its opening episode last night.

6000163414_20090106

KBS had been on the losing end in the Mon-Tue timeslot against competing dramas from SBS and MBC for almost 2 years now and it had been banking on Boys Before Flowers to reverse the situation. And it certainly did not disappoint as they finally succeeded on their 13th attempt, coming close to the opening episode rating of 14.6% set by Hello Miss on 19th March, 2007.

But what was the first impression after the first episode? “Although not close to the original, but it was passable” was the general remark given by those who were familar with the manga. Granted that most of the acting were quite stiff but its only the beginning so it should be better as we go along.

KBS Banking On Boys Before Flowers To Make An Impact

After months of hype followed by expectation, the Korean version of popular Japanese manga Hana Yori Dango, Boys Before Flowers finally makes its debut tonight on KBS2TV. The story revolves around an average girl, Geum Jandi (Goo Hye Sun) who makes her way into a prestigious school by chance and her encounters with the school’s notorious F4 following a chance meeting.

2009010514536107

The Korean version of Hana Yori Dango will seek to fill in the gaps that had been missing in the original manga and give a detailed account of exactly how Jandi made her way into the prestigious school. The focus of the first episode which will be shown tonight will be what was mentioned earlier in this article.

Goo Hye Sun had a really hard time filming the below-mentioned scene (see photo below). Besides being doused with eggs, flour from F4 supporters and having to change 10 outfits (for different takes), she also developed a serious bout of flu from the long filming hours of this particular scene.

n2009010512490692701

KBS is banking heavily on this drama to turn the tables on the competing dramas (MBC East of Eden, SBS Terroir) from the other tv stations in terms of ratings, having been on the losing end for nearly 2 years. But it’s certainly not going to be easy, having to go against the two who have an established viewership base already. Another thing to look out for is whether the Korean version can equal or surpass the Taiwanese and Japanese versions.

6000163414_20090106200901051053391001_1200901051530885220090105405431452009010541451200

It’s going to be a long-shot with the ratings. But there will be many teen and overseas viewers for this definitely. Will this be a Goong or a Goong S? Everything will be revealed tonight (reviews) and tomorrow (ratings).

Ah,
I can’t move at all (-┏)

It’s so boring to be cooped up at home everyday

At least there’s Kibum and Jeungmo (?) who come to play with me, but…
there’s no meaning to 3 people playing ‘Go Stop’ *…

Although I’ve memorized the Yoriwang dance as well as the dance steps of So Hot,
but because I can’t move now,
I can only wave my arms in the air…

To those who can’t differentiate from soy sauce, prawn sauce and coke (?),
it’s okay,
as long as I have my very cute girlfriends (referring to ELF),
I’ve already thought of using the ‘3 corn’ fist move** to handle you people.

I’ve reached the age suitable for marriage,
but these are those around me….

Bear Mithra,
Yuro (Smooth road?) Bong (Yunho),
Doro (Road) Bong (Donghae),
Horse (Siwon),
Beijing Fried Rice (Hankyung),
Flu Bum (Flu Kibum; because 감기 means cold/flu),

Only…

Although everyone says I won’t get married,
but I’m one who goes against everyone,
I’ll show them that I’ll successfully get married!
