Japan at the plate: Shortstop Hiroyuki Nakajima hit a single in the first inning and finished 1-for-3 in the game. Michihiro Ogasawara scored Japan's first run of the game in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly by Akinori Iwamura. Infielder Munenori Kawasaki hit a double that scored two runs to tie the game at 4 in the sixth inning. Norichika Aoki went 3-for-4.

Giants at the plate: Randy Winn scored the Giants' first run on a single by Pablo Sandoval and Edgar Renteria scored on a sacrifice by Travis Ishikawa for a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Renteria hit a solo home run in the third inning for the club's third run and finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Sandoval also notched two hits.

Japan on the mound: Starter Masahiro Tanaka was charged with two runs on three hits in two innings. He threw 32 pitches in the outing. Tetsuya Utsumi gave up two hits, including the Renteria home run, in two innings pitching in relief of Tanaka.

Giants on the mound: Staff ace Tim Lincecum gave up one hit and struck out five hitters in 2 1/3 innings. He also walked three batters in the 49-pitch start. The right-hander has not allowed a run in 9 1/3 innings this spring. Jesse English pitched two-thirds of an inning in relief of Lincecum, and Jack Taschner followed, giving up one run and two hits in one inning. Justin Miller gave up five runs on four hits in 1 1/3 innings pitched.

Up next: The Giants are off Thursday and will send Kevin Pucetas to the mound when the team resumes play Friday against the Rockies in Tucson. Japan faces the Cubs and Carlos Zambano at Mesa on Thursday. The club will practice Friday and travel to San Diego and face the Pool B winner Sunday.
