2009 April 4-5 Opening Weekend Roundup: Samsung vs. LG

4/4 - Samsung 6, LG 2
4/5 - Samsung 5, LG 3

WBC hero, Bong Jung-geun got the Opening Day start for the Twinkies. He wasn't nearly as impressive against Samsung as he was against Japan. Bong was under durress for most of the game, but Samsung never really made him pay for it. Bong worked 5 innings(112 pitches, 78 strikes) allowing 2 runs on 8 hits and 2 walks with 4 K's. Yoon Seong-hwan did something for Samsung that I can't remember seeing all last year. He pitched 7 innings(88 pitches, 57 strikes). He worked quickly, he changed speeds and got the Twins to make outs. Yoon allowed 1 run on 3 hits with 2 K's. Things got exciting in the 9th inning. With a 6-1 lead and 2 outs, Samsung reliever Kwon Hyeok surrendered a solo homer to Roberto Petagine. Samsung called on ace closer, Oh Seung-hwan to shut the door on LG. Oh promptly walked the bases loaded before striking out Lee Byong-gyu. It got...a little tense.

On Sunday, the KBO was introduced to Runelvys Hernandez. He wasn't that awful. He gave up a couple runs, but he wasn't clobbered and he wasn't that wild. He has a chance to stick as your standard "foreign innings eater." With emphasis on the "eater." At one point Runelvys was standing next to Samsung rookie 2B Kim Sang-soo. It looked like a father standing next to his son. I think Kim is the same size as one of Runelvys' legs. He may be challenging KIA's Choi Hee-seop for the largest waistline in the KBO. Runelvys gobbled up 5 innings(87 pitches, 55 strikes) allowing 3 runs on 6 hits and 1 walk with 1 K. Losing 3-1 in the 5th inning, Samsung rallied for 4 runs. The rally started with center fielder, Woo Dong-gyun clubbing a 2-run bomb to tie the game at 3. With runners on 2nd and 3rd with one out, rightfielder Choi Hyeong-woo lifted a fly ball into shallow center that was deep enough to advance the runners and score the go ahead run. Park Seok-min hit a soft grounder to first. Instead of taking the force out at first, Roberto Petagine threw home. Kim Sang-soo was able to slide under the tag and give Samsung a 5-3 and give Park Seok-min a gift RBI. Jeong Hyeon-ok tossed the last 2 innings to record the save. He faced 8 batters in the 2 inning his pitched. 2 recorded base hits. 5 of the remaining 6 batters went down on strikes.
