2009 April 4-5 Opening Weekend Roundup: Doosan vs. KIA

4/4 - Doosan 7, KIA 5
4/5 - Doosan 3, KIA 1

The mayor of Seoul, Oh Se-hoon, was on hand to toss out the first pitch this weekend.

Yoon Seok-min got the opening day start for the Tigers and did well...until he started the 5th inning. Yoon recorded the first two outs quickly. Then he allowed a pair of seeing-eye base hits and a walk to load the bases. Then Yoon allowed 3 consecutive doubles to Kim Dong-ju, Kim Hyeon-su and Matt Watson. By the time the dust had settled, Doosan held a comfortable 6-1 lead and Yoon was done for the day. Former MLBer Kim Sun-woo started opening day for the Bears. Kim worked 6 solid innings(91 pitches, 59 strikes) allowing 2 runs on 5 hits and 1 walk with 2 K's. KIA did mount a fake rally in the 8th inning and cut the deficit to 1 run, but Doosan's Lee Jong-wook delivered an RBI triple in the bottom of the 8th and Lee Yong-chan tossed a 1-2-3 9th to close out the game.

On Sunday, Doosan catcher Choi Seung-hwan clubbed a 2-run homer in the bottom of the 2nd to give Doosan a 2-0 lead. Choi's homer would be all the Bears would need to record their 2nd victory in as many games. Jeong Jae-hoon tossed 5 2/3 strong innings(89 pitches, 61 strikes) of 1-run baseball. Jeong allowed 5 hits and 2 walks with 7 strike outs. KIA's only run came on a 4th inning solo homer from center fielder Na Ji-won. Lee Yong-chan recorded his 2nd save of the season with a 1-2-3 9th inning. The KBO also got its first taste of Aquilino "Senor Smoke" Lopez. He's going to be cut by the end of May. I can feel it. Lopez came on to finished the 9th inning. He allowed a run on 2 hits before recording the final out.
